Classroom Visits
Students will come to the library every week for checkout and every other week for instruction (the same as last year.) Alternate weeks students will meet with Ms. Munsey, RE Counselor, for instruction. During their library time, kindergartners will be read to and check out 1 book of their own choosing. First through Fifth Grade students will be read to, participate in an instructional activity, and will check out 2 books of their own choosing.
Individual Checkout
Students are welcome to visit the library when they have free time to return and check out books on days their class is not scheduled to visit.
Checkout Period
Students check out books for a two-week period. Students often bring their books back after just one week because they are finished reading them or are wanting to check out different books. Overdue notices will be sent home with your child. Please look for these in your child's folder or backpack. If you ever believe your child has received an overdue notice in error, please contact me. Sometimes books do slip past me. I will double check the shelf. Sometimes the book is in your child's locker or classroom. Be sure to let the classroom teacher know if a book is missing.
Damaged Books
When a student checks out a book, he/she assumes the responsibility of returning the book in good condition. If a book is returned with damage, a letter or email will be sent notifying you of the damage and the cost of replacement, if necessary. Sales tax is added to the cost of the book. Some of our books have library binding which adds to the life and cost of the book. You are welcome to purchase a replacement for the book from another source. If it had library binding, the replacement book will need to be library bound.
Tree House and Bean Bags
The Tree House and Bean Bags are favorite reading spots in which students sit and read quietly after checking out their books. Each week 5 students have the opportunity to sit in the Tree House. They can also check out a magazine. Five students may sit on the bean bags under the Tree House. Students are rotated weekly until everyone gets a turn. The rotation then begins again. Kindergartners practice using shelf markers and becoming independent in the Everyone section first quarter. Once routines are established, they will get to sit in the Tree House and Bean Bags.
Intellectual Freedom
Article V of the Library Bill of Rights states, "A person's right to use a library should not be denied or abridged because of origin, age, background, or views." It further states, "...[P]arents--and only parents--have the right and responsibility to restrict access of their children--and only their children--to library resources. Parents who do not want their children to have access to certain library services, materials, or facilities should so advise their children. Librarians and library governing bodies cannot assume the role of parents or the functions of parental authority in the private relationship between parent and child."
Typically, kindergartners check out from the Everyone section (books with lots of artwork) throughout the year. First graders begin the year selecting books from the Everyone section, but will then be introduced to the other sections as their skills in using shelf markers to mark the book's place develop. This typically happens around the end of October. If your child selects a book to check out that you believe to be inappropriate due to content or reading level, simply have him/her return it to the library the following day to make a different selection. If you have a preference as to what your child reads or shouldn't read, please discuss this with them.
