Riverview Reads Around the World
This year’s reading program will look and feel a bit different. We will be synergizing
together as a Riverview community to track how many countries we can visit through
reading.
When reading books or a magazine, newspaper, or online article, think “Did I visit a
particular country through my reading? What did I learn about the people and their
culture through my reading? Do I see this country or these people differently now?”
You might choose a fiction book that is set in another country, or tells of a family that
immigrated to the United States. You might choose a nonfiction book that specifically
gives information about another country. You might read a folktale that originated
with a specific culture such as an African, Indian, Native American, or Spanish
folktale.
The library media center has a giant world map on the wall (shown below.) If your
reading has taken you to a different country, let Mrs. Hallier know. You will choose a
colored flag pin to mark the country you visited and help us toward our school goal to visit as
many countries as possible this year through reading!
Worldatlas.com states that there are 195 countries in the world, and by some
definitions, there are 197 countries. Wouldn’t it be awesome to visit ALL of them? Let’s
work together to see where in the world reading will take us.
